Strategy & execution across multiple subsurface and surface initiatives
We drove strategy through execution across multiple subsurface and surface initiatives within the upstream oil and gas sector, focusing on a data-driven architecture in the cloud. We spearheaded initiatives across both subsurface (geology, exploration, and production) and surface operations (including facilities and transportation). We integrated these initiatives with a deep understanding of the upstream sector’s complexity, through solutions bringing efficiency across different domains.
Cloud Architecture
We defined and designed an architecture capable of handling PBs of data at scale using sql, no-sql stores using the right store for the appropriate data structure. Cloud first allowed us to leverage its vast infrastructure to handle large-scale data processing, storage, and analytics. We enabled full fledged metadata management, and data cataloging through established governance practices, delivering a knowledge graph over time
Data Privacy and Security
We took a proactive approach in building privacy and security into the architecture "from the ground up", ensuring compliance with regulations and protecting sensitive data, which is critical in the energy sector. This included encryption, access control, and secured handling of proprietary subsurface and surface data
Data and Machine Learning (ML) Pipelines
We enabled data and ML pipelines through a system designed for continual ingestion, processing, and analysis of data, facilitating real-time decision-making. We incorporated streaming data and IoT interfaces, capturing real-time sensor data from the field (e.g., from drilling equipment, wells) and integrated into the system, further enhancing operational efficiencies near real-time.
UX-Driven Workflows, UIs and APIs
Designed with the user experience (UX) in mind, we built the APIs and user interfaces, allowing users to interact with the system effectively while making the data and insights accessible through workflows. This was crucial for adoption and ensuring the solutions are practical and easy to use for different stakeholders (engineers, data scientists, etc.).
Handling OLTP and OLAP at Scale
Versatile - OLTP (Online Transaction Processing) handling real-time transaction data, and OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) extensively for complex querying and analysis of historical data, integrating them with business intelligence toolstack. This data driven architecture, design and implementation delivered operational efficiency, data accessibility, and analytics capabilities in upstream oil and gas operations while ensuring robust security and privacy protocols.
Well planning and management
We developed a comprehensive well management system designed to oversee operations across five or more major locations. This system covers the entire lifecycle of well operations, from well planning and drilling to post-drill workflows. It includes a robust OLTP (Online Transaction Processing) framework with built-in data lineage and versioning capabilities, ensuring accuracy and traceability throughout the process. This system enables seamless management of well operations, improving efficiency, collaboration, and decision-making across teams involved in the pre-drill, drilling and post-drill stages.
Management & processing of spatial and seismic data
We built an end-to-end, UX-driven workflow backed by a robust data architecture to provide seamless data access for geophysicists, engineers, and seismic interpreters working in exploration and reservoir characterization. By automating processes and optimizing massive dataset transfers, we accelerate insight generation, allowing faster decision-making in reservoir exploration. Our solution handled petabytes of seismic data across different platforms, ensuring compatibility and integrity during format conversions (e.g., SEGY to OVDS, ZGY, FFX, SYX) for tools like Petrel, Paleoscan, and Geoteric. We ensure state consistency and synchronization across multiple systems, maintaining data integrity and usability throughout the workflow.

Additionally, we integrated third-party streaming data into our platforms, ensuring interoperability and enhanced insights from a variety of external sources. 3. Geophysical Platforms (Petrel, Paleoscan, Geoteric, RokDoc):
  • Constructing seismic data formats correctly such as SEGY, ZGY, etc., is crucial for platforms like Petrel (Schlumberger), Paleoscan (by Eliis for seismic interpretation), Geoteric (for geoscience visualization), and RokDoc (for rock physics and seismic inversion) to utilize them properly. These platforms enabled subsurface exploration, interpretation, and analysis, and managing data across them, ensured that teams can continue to leverage the strengths of each software package.
4. Managing State Across Different Operating Systems
  • Managed state consistency and synchronization of data across different operating systems and software platforms including multiple file systems (e.g., Windows, Linux) to make sure that the seismic data remains intact and usable regardless of the operating environment.
  • Maintaining state consistency enabled data to be made available for interpretation and analysis without the risk of corruption or misalignment as it moves between platforms.

We built an E2E UX driven workflow backed by a solid data architecture with seamless data access for geophysicists, geotechnicians, data loaders, seismic interpreters and engineers working in exploration and reservoir characterization, allowing them to derive insights from massive datasets efficiently. By automating and optimizing these processes, we help reduce time to insight, allowing for faster and more efficient reservoir exploration and decision-making. Our solutions ensure that all key stakeholders can access accurate, well-organized seismic data, driving productivity and enhancing exploration outcomes.
